Dieter Keck’s Burl Carvings The Creation Process
These burl wood carvings are made mainly from maple, birch, cherry or cedar. Each one of these types of wood has it’s own character and has been treated accordingly. The burls are first roughly carved by hand with a diversity of tools, like chisels, gauges and planes, etc. After a lengthy drying process, the burls are checked for proper moisture content, examined for cracks [certain crevices are acceptable] and hardness. Dieter then explores the burls for final shape, size and detailing, and hand-finishes them to the unique pieces of art that you see before you now. To acquire the shape and finish of these bowls it takes from 30 to 150 hours each. Each piece is catalogued, numbered and signed by the artist, Dieter Keck. Read Dieter Keck's biography here.
