A Christmas Tradition that Makes a Difference
by: Barb Keck

Would you like to give a gift that costs very little, yet is priceless? How would you like to start a new tradition that keeps your values in perspective? Life is moving faster everyday, it seems, and one thing most of us value is time. At the same time, relationships are becoming more strained, and what we cherish is love. Love and time are two gifts that come from the heart not the pocket book. Love and time are two ways to give what we most cherish; traditions are how we pass it on.

Your Guide to Simpler, More Meaningful Holidays and Special Occasions

The most touching gift I gave was the year I was really broke. Desperate to give something to my parents, I pondered for weeks to come up with something meaningful. I decided to give each of them a small decorative box, purchased from the dollar store. Inside the box, on pretty, small pieces of paper, about 15 of them, I wrote a “thank you” for something they gave me throughout my life. I thanked them for what they taught me, the experiences they gave me, and the fond memories I had as a child growing up. They were speechless as they unfolded and read through each slip of paper. The looks on their faces let me know I had given them one of the greatest gifts.

The beauty is they can open their box any day they like, and feel the love and appreciation I have for them. To this day they both keep their boxes close by.

This year I’ll be writing love letters to those closest to me. I want to let them know how much happiness they have brought to my life. It’s really quite simple to give a gift that touches the heart. Just put a little thought into what may bring back fond memories to your family and friends, and let them know what they mean to you.

Traditions are times when all that means the most to us can be shared. People move around, relationships change, and cultures mix, making it increasingly harder for many of us to keep our traditions alive. Make a difference with a new tradition. A gift from the heart brings everyone pleasure and a joyful spirit today and all year.
