The spirit of leadership, the desire
to accept and understand other people and their cultures has brought
incredibly positive changes to the history of inhumanity of mankind. This
alone is reason to celebrate your country’s accomplishments. In celebration,
people are joyous for what they stand for, believe in who they are, and are
proud of where they came from. With this positive attitude people become stronger
and make incredible change through their participation in their community.
Every country works hard toward a brighter future and a better
life for their citizens. Some countries mark a day for you to celebrate. Here
are just a few
examples:
1. The United States celebrates Independence
Day on July 4th, the declaration of Freedom born in 1776.
2. Canada Day, July 1st is Canada’s
Birthday, celebrating the events that took place in 1867 when the Canadian
federal government was created.
3. South Africa celebrates on April
27, for their freedom
in 1994.
Organize an event – big or small.
Cities and towns organize events where everyone can participate in music,
food and fun. Join the party or have your own celebration. Make music, have
a barbecue or a picnic. Make your own “Trivia Game” and see how
many people can name the past leaders of your country. Stand tall for your
national anthem – feel patriotic! For extra excitement set off fireworks
- everyone loves fireworks!
Every country needs to remind themselves of where they came from and how far
they have come. Freedom and peace has been fought for, and is something to
be proud of.
Share traditions and stories.
Have the kids do some research on a memorable piece of history,
such as the origin of their flag. Reward them for it with something they can
be proud of, such as a certificate, a trip they have expressed a desire for,
or a simple award purchased from a dollar store. Invite less fortunate children
to a party. By letting them experience the joy of having pride in your country;
you are helping develop their pride.
Bake a cake and decorate it as the flag of your country.
For the American cake on the right:
- 1 recipe of your favorite white or yellow cake (mix or
from scratch, your choice)
- 1 tub of whipped topping, or whipped cream from the dairy
counter
- 2 pints
of strawberries
- 1 C of blueberries (or enough for 1 blueberry per State)
After you make your favorite cake, top it liberally with the
Whipped topping. Then slice the strawberries and place them with the blueberries
on top of
the whipped topping.

For the Canadian Version:
Follow the American version, except instead of the Blueberries;
purchase more strawberries. When placing the strawberries on the cake, place
enough to make a fairly solid band on each side of the cake,
and then position the rest in the center in the shape of the maple leaf.
Wave your Flag and celebrate!
An easy way to show your appreciation for what your country
has done for you, display a flag on the front of your house. If you rent an
apartment or live in a dorm you could hang one on your wall or in front of your
window as a curtain. Another idea is to take one or two small flags and create
a pillow out of them for your couch – an instant conversation piece! Click
