Holiday Blues - How To Say Goodbye To Depression and Unhappiness

Holiday Blues - How To Say Goodbye To Depression and Unhappiness

By: Connie Ragen Green

The holiday season sometimes makes us feel depressed. While there is no logical reason for this to occur, it happens anyway. If you find yourself feeling blue during this time of year, here are some things you can do to lift your mood.

  • Call someone you know who may also be feeling down. Suggest that you get together for lunch or to watch a movie. Just being with someone else for a few hours can make both of you feel better.
  • Rent or go to a movie. Look for a comedy or something that is light. When you get caught up in a story about other people it tends to make you forget about why you were feeling down in the first place.
  • Volunteer in your community to help others you are less fortunate. By focusing your attention on others instead of yourself, you will see that your life is not as bad as you think it is at times.
  • Resolve to change whatever is making you feel this way. If there is something in your life that isn't working, promise yourself that you will make some big changes after the first of the year. Put your finger on exactly what it is that is not working - a relationship, your job, your financial situation, your health, or something else - and decide how and when you will make a change. You might not be able to do it overnight, but giving it some serious thought while you are feeling low will give you a place to start from.

We all create our own life situation. Make this the last year that you will allow anyone or anything to make you feel depressed or unhappy.
