Recent Surveys from the Web

Pharmaceutical Drugs
Source:
www.drugtopics.com
The large number of rural women who medicate themselves surprised the authors. They stated in their article that:
  • 92% of the participants took prescription medications
  • 96.5% of the participants self-medicated with OTC medications, and
  • 59.1% of the participants used herbal medications

Attitudes on Aging
Source:
www.agingresearch.org
Key findings include:
  • Seven out of eight online participants (85 percent) want to live to age 100 versus two out of three Americans (63 percent) polled by telephone;
  • Ninety percent of web users expect to live to at least 80 years of age whereas 60 percent of the general population felt that way;
  • Two-thirds believe that unless we find cures for major diseases affecting people in old age, the U.S. will not have enough hospitals, doctors, and equipment to care for the aging baby boom generation;
  • Internet users are more "pro-research" than the general population, with 58 percent of Internet users saying that the federal government should spend more money in aging research compared to 44 percent of the general population;
  • Interestingly, the general public and online users are about equal in believing scientists should be free to explore new areas of medical research, with 61 percent of the general population wanting regulation limited compared to 63 percent of web users;
  • Federally funded embryonic stem cell research remains a high priority for online users, with 83 percent in favor of it compared to 62 percent of the general public; and
  • Online participants are more unified in their feelings on increasing the amount of aging related research, with nine out of 10 calling for more research versus eight out of 10 of the general population.
The online version of our survey provides an important tool for our ongoing efforts, and will help us better understand the public's concerns and hopes for aging, track trends over time, and use the data to effectively educate consumers on critical biomedical research issues of the day.

What's more important - Type or Gender?
Source:
www.personalitytype.com

In an effort to confirm or refute some popularly held beliefs about differences between men and women, we analyzed several of the data to see what, if any effect gender had on specific behaviors and attitudes. In the majority of items analyzed, gender appears to have little influence. And in several instances, results suggested behavior was often more influenced by one's personality type that by one's gender. One example:

Participants ranked several qualities according to how important they were in a satisfying relationship. On the quality "intimacy", a slim majority of women considered it slightly more important than men did. But far greater differences were observed between Thinkers and Feelers. About 60% of Thinkers (both men and women) considered intimacy most important compared with 75% of Feelers (both men and women). And by a slight majority, male Thinkers considered it more important than female Thinkers.
